Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for Kids?July 22, 2021 4:26 pm |
Dental sedation has revolutionized dentistry by helping many people who would have been otherwise unable get the care they need. While sedation dentistry is often used for more intensive procedures, it can also help those who experience dental phobia, have dental anxiety, or are unable to sit still in the dental chair for extended periods of time.
Some people may recognize the value of sedation dentistry when it comes to adult dental care, but what about with kids? It’s a question we hear about often at Vista Ridge Family Dentistry, so we decided to lay out the information you need in this blog post.
The Safety of Dental Sedation
The short answer is yes: Sedation dentistry is considered safe for kids as well as adults. The important thing is that it’s performed by a trained professional who understands your child’s needs and medical history.
Due to updated rules by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, there should always be at least two trained people present in the room when deep sedation or general anesthesia is administered for additional safety measures
The Difference in Dental Sedation Options
There are actually varying levels of dental sedation out there from mild to deep, and which one is right for your child will depend on a variety of factors. Sedation is also different from general anesthesia in that your child remains conscious with the former and “goes under” with the latter. Your child’s dentist will discuss these options with you, and you should inform them of your child’s health history so they can determine which they may or may not be good candidates for.
