The Side Effects of Wisdom Teeth Removal & How to Manage Them

January 10, 2023 7:35 pm | Published by

Wisdom teeth removal is a routine surgical procedure that Dr. Kerr and our team perform frequently. As wisdom teeth are among the most common dental extractions, we know a lot about the side effects and best recovery tactics. While we will provide you with personal care instructions, this information can further help you manage the side effects of wisdom teeth removal.

Bleeding

Slight bleeding and redness are common, especially during the first 24 hours after wisdom teeth removal. If excessive bleeding occurs due to eating or movement, rinsing or wiping old blood clots away and biting firmly on a gauze pad can encourage a new clot to form. To minimize bleeding, sit upright and avoid exercise.

Swelling

Swelling around the mouth is often a normal reaction to wisdom teeth removal. The amount of swelling will vary for each patient but using ice packs and keeping your head elevated can help minimize swelling.

Infection

Keeping your mouth clean and clear is in the best interest of your oral health to prevent infection. Symptoms of infection include fever, painful swelling, and pus. An antibiotic may need to be prescribed if one has not been already.

Dry Socket

After a wisdom tooth is removed, a clot will fill the socket until replaced by gum tissue and bone. When the clot comes out before healing is complete, a dry socket can occur. This can cause aches and pain, and healing will take longer than originally planned.

Soreness

Whether it’s keeping your mouth open during wisdom tooth removal, or the feeling of numbing wearing off, pain and soreness are common. Sticking with soft or liquid foods can ease your jaw muscles back into proper function without pushing soreness too much.
