What Is Plaque?

You probably hear your dentist and dental commercials talk about plaque all the time. However, it’s quite possible that, like many, you aren’t too sure what it is and how it forms. We’ll discuss what plaque is, how to get rid of it, and how to avoid it in the first place!

Plaque 101

Plaque is a sticky, colorless paste filled with bacteria that forms on teeth. The fuzzy, slippery feeling on your teeth in the morning is plaque that’s formed overnight. When plaque isn’t regularly brushed away, it begins to harden into a yellow, hard-to-remove substance called tartar. The less plaque you leave on your teeth, the better. When plaque comes into contact with carbs and sugar, it creates an acidic reaction that eats away at tooth enamel and causes decay.

How to Get Rid of Plaque Buildup

The best thing to do is to try to take a proactive approach to your oral health and keep plaque from building up on your teeth. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), you should brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush for two minutes, twice a day, and floss at least once a day. The ADA also recommends rinsing your mouth with water after you eat to dislodge any trapped food debris and clean sugars off the teeth. Another way to avoid plaque buildup is to maintain a well-balanced diet and stray away from consuming too many carbs and sugars.

Schedule Your Dental Cleaning!

We understand that it can be difficult to thoroughly brush hard-to-reach areas in the mouth, which is where professional dental cleanings come in. When you visit the dentist twice a year, an experienced dental team will completely clean your teeth and gums and remove any plaque buildup that you’ve missed. Professional cleanings help minimize tartar and cavities!
