6 Teeth Whitening Myths DebunkedFebruary 21, 2023 7:14 pm |
Teeth are naturally white, but things like food, smoking, and age can turn them yellow or dull over time. Luckily, teeth can be whitened! There’s a lot of information about whitening out there, so let’s debunk six teeth-whitening myths:
Myth #1: Teeth Whitening Damages Your Enamel
Your tooth enamel is the thin layer on the outside of your tooth. It’s the strongest material in the human body and it’s safe to whiten! You just have to use the right products and always follow instructions.
Myth #2: You Can Use Lemons & Baking Soda to Whiten Your Teeth
There are lots of at-home teeth whitening remedies, but many of them can do more harm than good. Baking soda mixed with lemon juice is a common suggestion. However, lemon juice is very acidic. While baking soda neutralizes some of the juice’s acid, it’s easy to accidentally use too much juice. Baking soda is also very abrasive, so you can end up damaging your enamel over time.
Myth #3: Oil Pulling Can Whiten Your Teeth
Oil pulling is when you swish a spoonful of oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. People claim it has many dental benefits, including teeth whitening, but there’s no concrete evidence that it works better than good brushing and flossing.
Myth #4: You Only Need to Whiten Your Teeth Once
Teeth whitening is not a permanent treatment. If you whiten your teeth using over-the-counter products, the results won’t last very long. Professional whitening can last between six months to three years, depending on how well you take care of your teeth and whether you smoke, drink lots of coffee, or visit the dentist for cleanings.
Myth #5: Teeth Whitening Looks Unnatural
Are you worried that whitening your teeth will make them look fake? A good dentist will never let that happen! We have control over the shade, so we’ll always make sure it’s what you want and that it looks natural.
Myth #6: Professional Teeth Whitening Isn’t Worth It
There are lots of over-the-counter products and at-home remedies claiming to be just as good as professional whitening. The truth is that professional whitening provides the best results. This is because dentists are professionals, and your whitening treatment is customized to your needs. We also use stronger products, which give you whiter teeth in less time. Depending on how white you want your teeth, treatment could take just an hour.
