Can Multiple Teeth Be Extracted at Once?

At Vista Ridge Family Dentistry, we always want our patients to keep as many of their natural teeth as possible. However, there are cases in which it is better for the patient’s oral health and overall health to have one or more teeth extracted. If you need to have several teeth removed, we can go over your oral health needs and treatment plan to determine the best course of action for your smile.

Multiple Teeth Extractions

Having more than one tooth extracted in one procedure will mean that your recovery process will look a little different than if only one tooth was removed. Patients who have several teeth removed at one time typically need to rest and stick to a soft food diet for a longer period of time. If you decide to go this route, you may find that you also experience more swelling and have more trouble opening your mouth very wide.

However, having all or most of the teeth you need removed extracted during one dental visit means that you won’t have to attend extra dental appointments or go through the post-dental extraction recovery process again. Patients with dental anxiety can also benefit from having multiple teeth extracted at once, as it reduces the number of times that they will have to visit our office for a surgical treatment.

The Recovery Process

Once you’ve had one or more teeth extracted, it’s important that you go home and rest as much as possible for the remainder of the day regardless of whether you utilized dental sedation. Too much exercise and activity can cause the clot in the extraction sites to come loose, which can be painful and set back your recovery process.

Stocking up on soft foods that require little to no chewing before your procedure is important, as you will have limited use of your jaw post-treatment. Sharp foods like chips and nuts should be avoided at all costs, as they can irritate the extraction sites. Smoking and drinking through a straw should also be avoided.
