How Sugary Drinks Can Cause Damage
February 18, 2022 9:57 pm |Sweet treats and drinks sometimes satisfy cravings or hunger like no other. However, sugary drinks can place your oral health at risk when consistently consumed. Curious how sugary drinks can cause damage to your smile? Keep reading!
Sugar & Your Teeth
Everyone has bacteria in their mouth. Some bacteria are healthy, while others are harmful. When sugar is consumed through drinks or food, sugar can latch to the teeth, and bacteria eats away at the sugar.
When the bacteria consume the sugar, acid is not far behind. The acid produced by the bacteria causes damage to the teeth! Damage that sugar can cause includes:
- Tooth Decay
- Weak Teeth
- Gum Disease
Tips for Healthy Teeth
While the best solution to prevent sugary drinks from attacking the teeth is to stop consuming soda or beverages like energy drinks, we understand that is not entirely possible. Reducing or substituting the number of sugary drinks consumed for water or a diluted option is a great way to encourage healthy teeth, habits, and avoid restoration along with the following tips!
Rinse after Drinking Sugary Drinks
Did you know that rinsing your mouth with water after drinking soda or other sugary drinks can help wash away the remaining sugar?
Use a Straw for Less Sugar Exposure
When possible, drink with a straw. Straws help keep damaging acids and sugars away from direct contact with your teeth.
Wait Before Brushing Your Teeth
Rinsing is highly encouraged over brushing as friction against recently attacked teeth can cause more damage. Instead, wait at least half an hour before brushing!
