Why You Shouldn’t Overlook Your Gum Health
July 5, 2022 5:24 pm |Your gums are the soft tissues that support your teeth. While you may worry about dental issues like stains and cavities, your gums are just as important as your teeth! When you overlook your gum health, your oral health suffers.
What Happens When Your Gums Are Unhealthy?
Poor or inconsistent brushing and flossing often cause gum inflammation and infection. In its early stage, which may not cause symptoms, gum disease is called gingivitis. If the disease goes untreated, you may experience gum tenderness, swelling, and bleeding. The next stage – periodontitis – is more serious. Your gums can pull away from your teeth, causing loose teeth, more pain, and even tooth and bone loss. Gum disease is a top cause of tooth loss in adults!
Gingivitis is often easy to reverse with improved brushing and flossing. If you have more advanced gum disease, we may need to perform deep cleanings and scaling. For bad cases, surgery may even be necessary.
How to Take Care of Your Gums
Anyone can get gum disease, but people who smoke, older people, and pregnant people are more vulnerable. Good oral hygiene is the best way to keep your gums healthy. Brush at least twice a day, floss once a day, and visit the dentist for regular cleanings and exams. If you smoke or use tobacco, quitting is a great way to protect your gum health.
